About The Plan

The Comprehensive Campus Plan emerges from a process of listening, exploration, and discussion that generates ideas and possibilities to meet our community's goals for this campus and how it serves our educational mission.

Overview

The University of Michigan-Dearborn Comprehensive Campus Plan builds on our GO BLUEprint for success, the University's strategic plan. In this effort, we take all of the input that was collected from our campus community throughout the strategic planning process and focus on how that thinking translates into the physical campus space--now and for the next 10-15 years. It aligns with the enterprise-wide University of Michigan carbon neutrality goals and its strategic visioning and campus planning work.

What is a Comprehensive Campus Plan?

A Comprehensive Campus Plan, also sometimes called a facilities master plan, is designed to guide the development and evolution of our campus facilities and spaces through renovations and redevelopment, so that it fully supports the greatest possibilities for UM-Dearborn and its mission. It guides how we use buildings, structures, and open spaces to enhance the overall campus experience of students, faculty, staff, and the community while protecting and enhancing historical and other important spaces.

Created in alignment with the GO BLUEprint for success, the Comprehensive Campus Plan will guide the development of our campus over the long term and provide clear, flexible, and actionable short- and long-term direction for our physical spaces and how they serve our ambitions and values.

Why is a Comprehensive Campus Plan Important?

A campus plan informs how an institution uses buildings and spaces to meet its academic, scholarly, research, artistic, service, strategic, and related goals.

Our Comprehensive Campus Plan will guide us in ensuring that we meet these goals with our physical spaces and places while advancing accessibility, inclusion, and opportunity. It will articulate concepts and priorities that help make UM-Dearborn a vital place for everyone in the community, including students, faculty and staff.

How Does This Align With Our Strategic Plan?

UM-Dearborn is rich in opportunities for our students and faculty—practice-based learning, creative collaborative research and direct engagement with local communities. As an institution, we are always learning, and we strive to be responsive to the changing needs of our diverse students, the world in which they live and work and the communities we serve. The Comprehensive Campus Plan will harness the capabilities of our physical campus to strengthen key areas of strategic importance to the campus community:
Student Experience & Success
Students are at the center of every idea. These ideas will help set the foundation to help ensure success while on campus and beyond.
Diversity, Equity & Inclusion
Creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for all will help the entire campus community reach its full potential.
Faculty & Staff Excellence
Faculty and staff are at the forefront of their careers. Nurturing expertise and talent will provide even more opportunities for student success.
Economic Sustainability
Financial stability will allow the university to realize its goals and strategically build and plan for its next 60 years.
SmithGroup is recognized as one of the leading integrated planning and design firms in the United States and is leading the campus planning process.

Process and Timeline

Each phase builds upon the previous one to generate ideas and deepen our understanding of the issues and opportunities that will inform the campus planning effort. We look forward to hearing from you!

Understanding Current Spaces and Facilities

Our comprehensive campus planning process begins with input from those who know the institution best. We gain a deep understanding of our shared goals, aspirations, and current challenges for our existing campus facilities and spaces.

Exploring Campus Challenges and Opportunities

We use data and analysis to explore campus challenges and opportunities, with a special focus on how we use space to serve students.  We assess building conditions, parking needs, traffic flow for cars and pedestrians, and the quality of landscapes and natural systems. Focusing on these elements helps us determine opportunities for sustainable development and areas of improvement for our physical campus framework, from accommodating strategic investment to creating new transportation linkages and enlivening campus spaces.

Realizing Our Ideal Campus

The strongest ideas that emerge from the prior phases inform the new Comprehensive Campus Plan. Through development, renovation, and re-purposing space to recommendations for improvements to current campus systems, the Comprehensive Campus Plan provides a strong, flexible framework to help guide the university for years to come.
